Product specifications define acceptance criteria for products. These are sub-divided into the following check item types:
- Attribute: For attributes pass/fail criteria are descriptive. For example, there must be no scratch > 3mm on the sidewall.
- Text: For text items, the criteria describe the valid text. For example, data to be collected must be a date in the format; yyyy-mm-dd.
- Variable: For variables the criteria are numeric specifications. For example, the height of the product is a design specification and must be 20mm ± 2mm.
Check item templates are associated with one or more product types (see Product Type) and therefore typically associated with multiple products. Product specifications are created for each product that a check item template is associated with. For example, the height characteristic may be associated with the "Bottles" product type with three products: large, medium and small bottles. Each product will have its own specification for height.
Because a check item template may be referenced by more than one checklist, a product specification may also be applicable to multiple check lists. For example 5 samples of height measurements might be collected as part of a start-up checklist and then single samples of height may be measure as part of an hourly quality checklist. The specification for height need only be specified once for the height check item template and this specification will be used by all checklists that references height.
